Piece-Rate Wages: How Factories and Workshops Can Pay by Work Done (Correctly)

How to run piece-rate payroll for garment, textile, packing and assembly units: rate cards, daily work logs, approvals, minimum wage checks, PF and ESI on piece-rate earnings.

Quick answer

Piece-rate pay = units approved × rate per unit, summed for the wage period. Keep a rate card per item or operation, record work daily with the supervisor’s approval, store the rate used on each log, and check that total pay is not below the applicable minimum wage. Piece-rate earnings are wages, so PF and ESI apply as for time-rated staff.

Key takeaways
  • Rate cards per item and operation, with effective dates.
  • Daily logs approved by supervisors — not a monthly total from memory.
  • Minimum wage still applies to piece-rated workers.
  • PF and ESI apply on piece-rate wages.

When piece-rate makes sense

Stitching, embroidery, packing, sorting, loading and assembly — any work that can be counted. Paying by output rewards skilled workers and makes costing exact, but only if the counting is trusted.

Build a rate card

Item / operationUnitRate (₹)From
Shirt — collar attachpiece4.5001/04/2026
Shirt — full stitchpiece18.0001/04/2026
Carton packingcarton6.0001/07/2026
Loadingbag (50 kg)2.0001/07/2026

Changing a rate? Add a new row from a date. Logs before that date keep the old rate — which is why the rate must be saved on each log.

Record work daily

  1. Supervisor logs units per worker per operation at the end of the shift (or the worker logs and the supervisor approves).
  2. Attach a photo for large lots.
  3. Rejected or reworked pieces are not counted.
  4. Approved logs are locked with the payroll month.

Calculation

Piece-rate earnings = Σ (approved units × rate saved on the log) Check: earnings ≥ minimum wage for days worked → else top up

Example: Meena stitches 620 full shirts in October at ₹18 = ₹11,160, plus 300 collars at ₹4.50 = ₹1,350. Earnings ₹12,510. Compare with the applicable minimum wage for her days worked; if lower, add a top-up.

PF, ESI and bonus

Piece-rate earnings are wages. Calculate PF (12% on wages up to the ceiling if restricted), ESI (if total wages are within the limit) and bonus on them as for other workers.

Work orders and costing

Link logs to a work order (e.g. “Lot #2291 — 600 shirts”). You see progress (420/600) and labour cost per lot as work happens, not after the month ends.

Frequently asked questions

Do minimum wages apply to piece-rate workers?

Yes. Piece-rated workers must not earn less than the applicable minimum time-rate wage for the work. If output falls short for reasons outside the worker’s control, top up to the minimum.

Is PF applicable on piece-rate wages?

Yes. Piece-rate earnings are wages, so PF and ESI are calculated on them like any other wages, subject to the ceiling and coverage rules.

Can I mix piece-rate and monthly salary?

Yes — many units pay a small fixed salary plus a piece-rate incentive, or pay some staff purely by work. Your payroll should handle both in one run.
